BEFORE AND AFTER | The Raging Elk Hostel

The Raging Elk Hostel is situated on the corner of 6th and 9th street, just off of the Historic Downtown of Fernie. 11 years ago the property was purchased by Joe Howse, as he was attracted to both the location and the business potential of this particular building. Joe set himself a flexible time frame with regards to certain phases of renovating this building. Phase one was completed in 2000. This phase included a complete overhaul of the downstairs interior in the 4000 square foot common area, highlighted by interior log work.

Phase two was the completion of the front exterior in 2008. This project included new log signage, a timber frame entrance and beautiful patio addition. Joe has a third phase in mind, which includes the completion of a lounge they hope to be completed by the fall of 2009. The fourth and final phase will be a 4000 square foot penthouse on top of The Raging Elk Hostel, where Joe looks forward to residing in personally with his family.

When did you purchase the house, and for what price?

I purchased the Raging Elk, formally known as the Sundowner Motel, in the summer of 1997 for $275,000

What was your ultimate goal, renovation wise?

My goal was to create a world class backpackers lodge in a grand rocky mountain style.

What was the renovation process like, and what was the time frame?

The renovation process has been interesting at times because I have been dealing with a couple of construction companies not just one sole contractor. In the grand scheme of things everything seems to be falling into my designated time frame, except the lounge, which has been pushed back a season.

How would you describe the design style you used?

My wife and I feel the design has fit in well with the original building and the surrounding mountains and community. The design was based around a large timber frame style that tied into the mountain community

Is there anything you would have done differently?

We are still unsure of the flooring on the patio. In the future hopefully before winter, but probably in spring we would like to add large wood entrance doors and also river rock to fully complete the front.

Ultimately were you pleased with the final result?

Yes, we are both extremely pleased. I feel that what we have completed so far has fully transformed the look of our building. Our business now has great curb appeal and it looks more inviting.

What is the property currently worth?

The value of our building has increased substantially since this renovation. So has our insurance.

What is one renovation/design rule you live for?

If it can’t be done today it can be done tomorrow.
