Fernie Facts

Named after William Fernie who brought coal mining to the area.
The Canadian Pacific Railroad arrived in 1898
Fernie was incorporated in 1904
Fernie experienced two devastating fires in 1904 and 1908, which resulted in the Historic Downtown made up of brick and stone.
Fernie Snow Valley opened in 1963 and was renamed Fernie Alpine Resort in 1997
Average snowfall: 879 centimetres at the ski hill and 360 centimetres in town
Average winter temperature: -2 C high/-11C low
Average summer temperature: + 25 C high/+8 C low
Ski season: mid-December to mid-April
Summer season: June to September
Population: approximately 4,200 people, more than doubling during the busy winter and summer months.
