The Kootenay Area
The community of Fernie is nestled within the Kootenay Rockies, in the southeastern corner of British Columbia near the popular towns of Sparwood, Elkford, Crowsnest Pass, Cranbrook and Kimberley. This area offers a diverse topography of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, beaches, mineral hot springs, alpine meadows, snow-capped mountains, and what seems like an endless supply of recreational opportunities.
The Kootenay region has been receiving a multitude of attention for the amazing skiing and snowboarding opportunities found at the many resorts located within the area. The Kootenay Rockies hosts 34.2% of the province’s ski runs, with Fernie Alpine Resort the second largest ski facility with 107 runs. Fernie Alpine Resort became one of the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies, which has increased the awareness and draw to this small ski community worldwide. Kimberley Alpine Resort, just an hours drive from Fernie, is also one of the Resorts of the Canadian Rockies and conveniently located to the Canadian Rockies International Airport.
The variety of terrain found in the Kootenays, the array of activities, and the continually growing and evolving music and cultural scene has resulted in the area becoming a hot destination during the stunning winter months. The news of direct flights between Salt Lake City and the Canadian Rockies International Airport has heightened the spotlight and with another epic winter upon us, this season is sure to be as busy as ever.
